ABC/BOB D'AMICOWell, it's here. April 1. April Fools Day. The day the Happy Endings writers Twitter account was counting down to. And what do we have to show for it?
"Happy...April Fools' Day! Sorry! All for fun. Caspe & Co had nothing to do with it. Thanks for being so hyper-passionate about the show," the @HappyWrites account tweeted.
Yes the Twitter account did tease that something special was coming at 12 p.m. PT today. However… "Nothing else coming at noon. You're an amazing group. Take care!"
Was it all a ruse?! Yep.
But co-creator David Caspe said the buzz did get the ball rolling on a possible reunion of sorts, but nothing panned out by the April 1 countdown end date.
"Happy Endings remains cancelled for now. Hopefully one day we'll be able to do an hourlong or a couple stand-alone episodes, and I've talked to the cast about even just doing a five-minute cold open. I want to apologize to anyone who is annoyed. It was just a writers' room bit that kind of got away from them," Capse told EW. "When it started, we all sort of laughed because we figured no one cares anymore, and then it triggered all these articles, which is really flattering. I was pumped to see that people still cared, but then I realized that this could piss off a lot of fans, and our hardcore fans and critics are all we've ever had."
Obviously fans (ahem, us too!) are a little very annoyed.
A little backstory on these shenanigans: The Twitter account for the Happy Endings writers room unfollowed everybody it was previously following and followed only a handful of people and streaming platforms including Netflix and Yahoo. A countdown to today, April 1, 2015, began and the account sent out tweets with the hashtag ketchup—as in catch up?—with music videos teasing returns. Many fans assumed there'd be a revival, but none of the streaming platforms or networks that were previously rumored as interested in saving the show said there was anything in the works for a season four.
The cast, which included Casey Wilson, Adam Pally, Elisha Cuthbert, Damon Wayans Jr., Zachary Knighton and Eliza Coupe, have gone on to other projects. Wilson herself said she had no idea what the clock was about. It's nothing to my knowledge," Wilson said. "I think it might be our writers assistant was joking around, and unfortunately I don't think it's a welcome joke for everyone."
But then Pally, who left The Mindy Project as a series regular this year, gave our hearts a little jolt when he told The Huffington Post, "I'll tell you this: I know the origin of that Happy Endings countdown clock was not intended to be where it is headed. That's as much as I can give you."
And here we are. With this.
