Where ya been, Quinn?

When we last saw Carrie Mathison's on-again/off-again kind-of-a love interest, he had headed off on a secret mission to Syria, right after asking Carrie to consider a relationship with him and help him quit the CIA. By the time Carrie called him to tell him she was in, he had already disconnected his number and gone off the grid.

When season five starts, things are going to look quite a bit different after a several year time jump. Carrie (Claire Danes) will have left the CIA to work for a wealthy German philanthropist, while Quinn (Rupert Friend) is still just as entrenched as ever.

In the exclusive video above, Homeland stars Friend, Mandy Patinkin, and Danes finally give us a little taste of what's to come this season, especially when it comes to Quinn's whereabouts—and his sanity. Press play above to see Quinn fully "unhinged."

Showtime

"At the beginning of the season, we find that Quinn's been in deepest, darkest Syria," Friend says in the video above.

Luckily, he's not totally alone, as he has apparently struck a "very special friendship" with Saul, who, in our opinion, is probably the best possible person to have a special friendship with on this show.

"There is no one on this planet that Saul would put more trust and faith in, than Peter Quinn," Patinkin says, in that very special Patinkin-y way that makes us wish we were the Peter Quinn he was talking about.

Not only do they have a special friendship, they have a special secret friendship!

"It's a bond that no one else can know about," Friend says, "I think at this point that suits Quinn very well."

Unfortunately, this doesn't bode too well for any sort of relationship between Carrie and Quinn, especially now that she's focusing more on being a mom.

As showrunner Meredith Stiehm told us back in March, it's going to take some time for Carrie and Quinn can work back up to where they were when season four ended.

"Carrie and Quinn have parted ways after they came together in the finale," Stiehm said. "Quinn was actually really ready to try things, but Carrie sabotaged it, and I think she regrets that. She tried to get him back and he was gone, so she knows she screwed that up. It's two years later, and they've both moved on to other things. But something's always in the air and when they cross paths again, we'll see what happens. I'm excited to see where their paths cross."

Yep, us too!

Homeland returns four a fifth season on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 9 p.m. on Showtime.
