In her first TV interview since announcing her bid for the presidency, Clinton was critical of Trump's comments regarding Mexican immigrants. "I feel very bad and very disappointed with him and with the Republican Party for not responding immediately and saying, 'Enough. Stop it,'" she said on CNN. "They range across a spectrum of being either grudgingly welcome or hostile toward immigrants."
After Clinton's interview aired Tuesday, Trump fired back Wednesday. "Hillary Clinton was the worst Secretary of State in the history of the United States. There's never been a Secretary of State so bad as Hillary. The world blew up around us. We lost everything, including all relationships. There wasn't one good thing that came out of that administration or her being Secretary of State," Trump told NBC News.
Asked if she would be a good president, Trump, 69, said, "She was the worst Secretary of State in the history of our nation. Why would she be a good president? I think she would be a terrible president."
Trump didn't always see Clinton as the enemy, though.
Clinton and her family attended Trump's 2005 wedding, and he donated to Clinton's Senate campaign. "Hillary Clinton, I think, is a terrific woman," he told Fox News' Greta Van Susteren in 2012, when Clinton was still Secretary of State. "I am biased because I have known her for years. I live in New York. She lives in New York. I really like her and her husband both a lot. I think she really works hard."
"I think she really works hard and I think she does a good job. I like her," he added.
Months later, he said Clinton would "be tougher to beat" than President Barack Obama. Trump has never cared for Obama, and as he told Van Susteren in 2012, Clinton would have been a "better" leader.
Trump spoke highly of Clinton before the Benghazi attack in September 2012.
In a statement provided to MSNBC via a spokesperson Wednesday, Trump did not cite Benghazi or any other reason for his apparent change of heart. "Hillary Clinton was the worst Secretary of State in the history of the United States," he reiterated. "On top of that, she is extremely bad on illegal immigration."
"Despite anything you may hear to the contrary, I do not think she is electable."
Clinton, meanwhile, has yet to respond to Trump's latest remarks.
Trump also condemned another one of his opponents in his NBC News interview. "Jeb Bush will never take us to the promised land," the magnate argued. "He doesn't have it. Hillary will never take us to the promised land. Hillary will be a disaster as a president. Jeb will be very poor as a president. No energy."
